Humble Area East TX History

Joseph Dunman is believed to be the first settler in what is now Humble.

Pleasant Smith Humble, after whom the area is named, purchased land along the San Jacinto River and operated a ferry. Humble later began operating a post office out of his home and became a justice of the peace.

Taking advantage of the area's lush surroundings, C.O. Bender opened a sawmill in Humble. Soon, the small community flourished through the lumber trade.

In the early years, oil was discovered in Humble. People moved to the area, and Humble saw rapid growth. Local entrepreneurs formed the Humble Oil and Refining Company, now known as Exxon.

As the oil boom slowed down, residents returned to truck farming and lumbering.

Eventually, the small town moved to incorporate. The city of Humble now operates a council-manager form of government with a mayor, 5 council members, and a city manager.

Several factors contributed to Humble's subsequent growth. This includes the completion of the Eastex Freeway (Highway 59). As well as the construction of the Houston Intercontinental Airport.
